Joe Grubb

I am a native of Media, PA, and have resided in Lyndell, Chester County PA since 1984. I am a graduate of Dickinson College. I just started painting in 2008 at age 59, and am an "Outsider", completely self-taught, with no art training of any kind. I always had an artistic bent, which I expressed through furniture design and construction, and commercial graphic design. I work in watercolor and oil, and favor landscapes, particularly where water is a feature. Scenes of starkness , desolation, or aged decay evoke a wistful, lonely feeling I find intriguing and try to portray. Being self-taught and somewhat late to the game, by necessity each of my pictures needs to teach me more about technique and composition, as well as being aesthetically and emotionally pleasing. I tend toward detailed, very realistic portrayal of subjects, with an eye on trying to reveal that which is essential and powerful about them.
I am a member of, and have won awards in juried shows mounted by, these organizations: Pennsylvania Watercolor Society (Signature Member); Philadelphia Water Color Society (Signature member); Delaware Valley Art League; Chester County Art Association; and Community Arts Center of Wallingford, PA. I have exhibited in many shows, including the Chester County Studio Tour (multiple times), Community Arts Center Show (multiple), Academy of Notre Dame de Nemours show (multiple), Annmarie Gardens Art Fair (MD), Havre de Grace (MD) Show (multiple), York (PA) Artfest, and many others.
I personally mat (if needed) and frame all of my pictures. I make nearly all of my frames from scratch.
I also design and make floorcloths, hand painted heavy canvas pieces that can be used in any decorative context.
I do accept commissions, and have recently completed a large custom mural painted on a client's wall that was featured on the front page of the Daily Local News of West Chester. I'd be interested in discussing any concept you might have in mind. I can be reached at joegrubb3@gmail.com, by phone or text at 484-354-2233, or by mail at PO Box 263, Lyndell, PA 19354.
